| Mastana 2003 |
Sunday 2nd March 2003, Guildhall This was again the highlight of the CUHCS calendar. Returning to the Guildhall for a second year, it was a night of culture and comedy. This year we raised over £3000 for charity and Mastana certainly lived up to its name! The night got off to an explosive start to the sound of the Dhol, followed by a beautiful piece on the Veena. From the soothing sounds of the strings, we moved to the vibrant 'Rang De' performed in true Bollywood style. This was followed by a contrasting dance in the classical style of Bharat Natyam. The ultimate fusion of classical Indian music, jazz and blues was skilfully reworked on the Beatles' classic "Across the Universe". The effect was astounding, and the soulful sounds led us to the interval. The second half of the show brought together many types of contemporary dance, starting with a remix of Devdas’ "Dola Re", "Addictive" by Truth Hurts and "Dhol Jageero Da". From the beat of the dance we moved to the Tabla, and also an incredible traditional, Sufi inspired, Qawali. One act that stood out was a Kathak performance, a classical dance form originally performed in the palace courts of ancient India, but this time performed by a male. If that wasn't enough we were joined by Sir David Attenbhogal Singh, with his new documentary, "Walking with Indians", a comical look at the typical Indian family, with many scenes being all too familiar to the majority of the audience! After a beautiful rendition of the timeless "Kabhie Kabhie" came the finale of the show, "The M factor", where the committee responsible for Mastana had their chance to get up on stage. All in all a night to remember! |
